Sweet Traditions: Loukoumades Recipe with Greek Honey
This month, we invite you to embark on a journey into the heart of Greek traditions with a mouthwatering (and simple!) recipe that perfectly encapsulates the essence of the Mediterranean - Loukoumades, fried Greek honey puffs. Use our small-batch honey to sweeten this delicious dessert!
Originating from ancient Greece, Loukoumades are bite-sized, airy dough balls deep-fried to golden perfection and drizzled with honey. These little spheres of delight are a staple in Greek cuisine, enjoyed during festivals, celebrations, and family gatherings.
The addition of our premium honey not only sweetens the deal but also imparts a unique floral note that compliments the crispy exterior and fluffy interior of the Loukoumades.
Ingredients for Loukoumades:
1 cup of lukewarm water
1 cup of lukewarm milk
15 g active dry yeast
3 ¼ cup flour
2 tbsp sugar
1 tsp salt
4 tbsp A Peace of Greece olive oil
Vegetable oil for frying
To garnish:
¾ cup A Peace of Greece honey
Cinnamon powder
Chopped walnuts
Instructions:
In a bowl, add the water, sugar, and yeast. Stir with a whisk until the yeast dissolves. Allow to sit for 5 minutes.
In a mixing bowl, add the yeast mixture and add in the rest of the ingredients for the dough. Whisk at high speed until the mixture becomes a smooth batter.
Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let rest in a warm place for at least 1 hour.
In a medium-sized frying pan, pour enough vegetable oil to cover the loukoumades. Heat the oil on medium heat. Test the oil by dropping a small amount of dough into it. If the oil sizzles, it’s hot enough.
Dip a tablespoon in some oil and remove excess. Dip your hand in the dough, and using your palm, squeeze out a small portion of the dough between your thumb and index finger (like you are making a fist). Using the spoon, grab the dough ball off of your hand and drop it carefully into the oil.
Repeat the process until the surface of the pan is filled. Cook until golden brown on all sides.
Using a slotted spoon, remove loukoumades once cooked and place on paper towels to remove excess oil.
Serve on a large plate, drizzle with honey, and sprinkle with cinnamon and chopped walnuts.
